Volcanoes Panik, Harrold make mark again in AFL

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) had another hit, his eighth in nine games, and Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10) pitched an inning in Scottsdale's 8-5 setback to Surprise. Joe and Stephen show yet again the strength of the Giants organization by playing well in the highly touted Arizona Fall League.

The Scorpions (7-15, 3rd AFL East) host Peoria tomorrow.

In other news, David Quinowski (Volcanoes '05, '09) is 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA and 6 strike outs for the Cibao Giants of the Dominican Winter League.

Volcanoes '12: August team will be road warriors

Your 2012 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will go into August, 2012 with a series of critical road series that will test the club's stamina during the final push of the regular season.

August will be critical for every team that didn't clinch a spot as usually the final playoff spots have 4-5 teams within grasp going into the final homestand. 

Mark you calendars August 6-10 (home, Spokane); August 9-11 (home, Vancouver) and August 28-September 1 (home Tri-City) as you will have a direct hand in helping the Volcanoes 2012 playoff push.

Volcanoes '12 - July will be test; great opportunity for team

Your 2012 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will go into July with six straight games against division rivals, Vancouver with Eugene following immediately after.

By the Volcanoes' first off day on July 10, 2012, the club will have  completed 25 of the 39 first half games and will have a clear sense of what will be needed the next two weeks to try and lock up an early Northwest League playoff spot.

Mark you calendars for July 11-18, 2012 as the home stand with Yakima and Everett could be the deciding games for a first half playoff spot.

Panik doubles for Scorpions; Giants announce 2012 Spring Training schedule

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) had a RBI-double tonight helping the Scottsdale Scorpions defeat Salt River tonight, 9-5. Joe raised his AFL batting average to .229. The Scorpions host Salt River tomorrow.

In other news, the six-time World Champion, Giants announced their 2012 Spring Training schedule. The exhibition season starts 1:05 p.m. March 3, home against the Colorado Rockies.

Volcanoes alum Harrold wins third game of AFL season

Volcanoes alumni Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10) pitched a perfect 9th and the Scottsdale Scorpions rallied to beat Mesa tonight 8-7; Stephen improved to 3-0 and a 1.93 ERA in the AFL.

Stephen is tied in the AFL in wins, is in the top 10 in ERA and appearances. The Scorpions are at Salt River tomorrow.

In other Volcanoes alumni news, Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) was named 2011 Minor League Baseball Best Class A Hitter.

Crawford extends AFL hitting streak to 8

Brandon Crawford (Volcanoes '08) extended his hitting streak tonight in Scottsdale's 10-5 set back to Mesa tonight. Brandon is batting a team high .342 for the Scorpions.

Scottsdale is back in action tomorrow against Mesa.

Volcanoes alum Vogelsong finalist for NL Comeback Player of the Year

Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98) is one of three finalists for the 2011 National League Comeback Player of the Year award to be given November 3, live on the MLB Network.

Ryan was a long shot to make the big club but after winning his first game as a Giants starter went on to a splendid 13-7 record with a 2.71 ERA. Ryan was a 2011 NL All-Star, finished fourth in the NL in ERA and was named the Giants Inspirational Player of the Year.

Pitching for your Volcanoes in 1998, Ryan went 6-1 with a 1.77 ERA and 66 strike outs in 56 innings (click here to buy the team set from the Volcanoes Store).

Panik goes deep, extends AFL hit-streak to six

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) went 2-3 including a home run in the Scorpions 8-4 loss to Peoria today; Joe extended his hit streak to six.

Over his last six games, Joe is batting .348 (8-for-23) raising his overall average 50 points to .244. The Giants 2011 First Round pick is getting national attention and was featured on MLB.com.

Combining Joe's Volcanoes and Scorpions statistics, Joe has played 81 games, and has 102 hits in 311 at-bats (.328) with 7 home runs and 58 RBI.

"Big Game" Brandon Crawford goes yard in Scorpions win

Brandon Crawford (Volcanoes '08) had two hits including his first AFL home run of the fall to lead the Scottsdale Scorpions over Phoenix 9-4. Brandon increased his team-leading batting average to .353.

Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) also had two hits as the Scorpions rallied from an early 4-0 deficit.

Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10) pitched a scoreless 9th inning to lower his ERA to 2.16 for the fall.

Brandon has a seven-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .462 (12/26). Scottsdale (5-11, 3rd AFL East is off tomorrow), the Scorpions resume action Monday at Peoria.

Panik hits again for AFL's Scorpions

One year ago, Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) was beginning his last season of college baseball -- today he is showing his talents with the top prospects in Minor League Baseball. Joe had a hit and RBI in Scottsdale's 13-8 setback to Surprise today, raising his batting average to .222.

Most of the season, Joe has batted eighth or ninth for Scottsdale; tonight he hit seventh in the batting order, which includes Nationals prospect Bryce Harper.

Over his last five games, Joe is 6-for-20 (.300 average), has a five-game hitting streak and has struck out in none of his last 20 at-bats. In fact, in Joe's 40 plate appearances in the AFL he has only struck out three times (while walking four times).

In summary - it means Joe is more than holding his own in the AFL.

Panik, Crawford hit for Scorpions

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) and Brandon Crawford (Volcanoes '08) each had a hit in the Scottsdale Scorpions' 4-1 set back against Mesa today.

Brandon improved his batting average to .345 - which leads all Scorpions players; Joe's average improved to .212.

Scottsdale (4-10. 3rd AFL East) is at Surprise tomorrow.

Harrold, Volcanoes alums help Scorpions to 11-10 AFL win

Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10) pitched a scoreless 10th inning for the win as the Scottsdale Scorpions stormed back to top Phoenix 11-10 yesterday in Arizona Fall League Action. The Scorpions trailed 9-3 going into the 6th inning.

The Scorpions improved to 4-8, 2nd in the AFL East on the year, and two of the team's four wins are from Stephen (2-0, 2.45 ERA with 7 strike outs in 7.1 innings).

The Scorpions also got help from  Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) who hit a double, drove in a run and scored a run. Gary is batting .229 (8/25, 4 RBI, 2 SB); Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) had a hit and scored a run and improved his batting average to .200.

Volcanoes Winter Leagues Report for Oct. 18, 2011

Today, Volcanoes Watching reports on your Volcanoes alumni playing in the Venezuelan Winter League - loaded with prospects in the Giants organization.

Aguilas del Zulia (The Zulia Eagles)

Ebert Fernandez - P (possible Volcanoes '12 player) just reported to the team with a 13-5 career record in the Dominican Summer League. Ebert will be working to lower his ERA as he continues to work to progress up the Giants system and possibly get time with the Volcanoes next season.

Renzo Freite - P (possible Volcanoes '12 player) in his second professional season; Renzo has a 4-2 career record, ERA under 1.95 and a 2:1 strike out to walk ratio.

Jose Flores - 3B (Volcanoes '07, '08) Jose got 55 at-bats for Double A Richmond this season and is looking to continue his growth going into Spring Training 2012.

Nelder Gonzalez - 2B (possible Volcanoes '12 player) Nelder is coming off his first season of professional baseball; the 18-year-old prospect is looking for additional quality at bats this winter.

Ydwin Villegas  - SS (Volcanoes '09) Ydwin played in 17 games for Triple A Fresno this year. The Volcanoes alum has the skills on the field and is looking to get his average up consistently.

Panik has two-hit night for Scorpions

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) had 2 hits tonight for Scottsdale, which fell to Phoenix 7-4.

The Giants First Round pick raised his AFL average to .192 (5 for 26, .442 OPS) in the very competitive Fall League.

Scottsdale (3-8, 3rd AFL East) is back in action tomorrow at Phoenix.

Volcanoes alum, Quinowski, off to solid start in Dominican League

David Quinowski (Volcanoes '05, '08) is off to a solid start with Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League.

The "Giants" reliever has 2.1 innings so far, striking out 2 and yielding a single run. David played for Double A Richmond during the year; and looking back at his Volcanoes career over two seasons went 4-2 with an ERA under 2.70.

David saw action during Richmond's run to the 2011 Eastern League Championship Series with New Hampshire and represents one of many Volcanoes alumni staying active by playing winter ball.

"Big Game" Brandon Crawford continues to shine in AFL

Brandon Crawford (Volcanoes '08) continues to make a strong case to become an permanent part of the San Francisco Giants 2012 Opening Day roster with his strong Arizona Fall League season.

Although Brandon's Scottsdale Scorpions (3-7, 2nd AFL East) fell short 9-8 today, the shortstop continued to shine getting another 3 hits to raise his AFL average to .360 (9-25, .407 OBP); Brandon's 2 triples are tied for second place in that category so far.

Panik, Brown, Maday all see AFL action against Peoria

Volcanoes alums Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11), Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) and Daryl Maday (Volcanoes '07) all saw action tonight for the Scottsdale Scorpions who at time of publication were trailing Peoria 11-5.

Gary had a hit and scored 2 runs in 2 official at-bats through 8 innings; Joe had a hit in 4 at-bats; Daryl went 3 innings yielding 4 runs.

The Scorpions are back in action tomorrow again against Peoria.

In other news around the organization, shortstop Ehire Adrianza (Volcanoes' 08) is batting .250 in early action for Tiburones de La Guaira of the Venezuelan Winter League.

Volcanoes alumni '11/12 Mexican League Report

Multiple Volcanoes alumni and possible Volcanoes '12 players are playing in one of the international Winter Leagues. Tonight we look at recent updates from the Mexican League.

Alex Hinshaw (Volcanoes '05), Alejandro Flores (signed 2011, projected possible Volcanoes '12), Alan Garcia (40th round draft pick 2011, project possible Volcanoes '12), all play on Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

The team is currently 0-2, t-6th place in early action. Average home game attendance is 13,600!

Volcanoes '12 - June critical month for Volcanoes

This June will be critical for the Volcanoes playoff hopes for 2012; Salem-Keizer plays 11 of 16 NWL games at home in June.

The Volcanoes have their annual exhibition against the College All-Stars June 14, 2012 and then it is off to races for a First Half playoff spot.
  • June 15-19, 2012: the Volcanoes host a five-game homestand against Boise (Cubs).
  • June 20-24, 2012: the Volcanoes are on the road at Yakima (Diamondbacks)
  • June 25-30, 2012: Salem-Keizer returns home hosting Eugene (Padres) then Everett (Mariners) in three-game series respectively.

Volcanoes alum Crawford hits triple in loss to Mesa

The Mesa Solar Sox topped the Scottsdale Scorpions 3-2 in Arizona Fall League action today; a bright spot for the Scorpions was a triple by Brandon Crawford (Volcanoes '08).

Brandon is off to a solid start this season in the AFL with 5 hits in 16 at-bats (.313 average) and 2 triples (leads the AFL).

Scottsdale (3-3, 2nd AFL East) hosts Salt River tomorrow.

Who's Who of Volcanoes playing Winter Ball

Volcanoes Nation, you will get meaningful game coverage of your Volcanoes alumni in games all through the start of 2012 Spring Training, thanks to a Who's Who of players in the Latin Winter Leagues.

The Giants organization released today the current list of players scheduled to appear in leagues in Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Volcanoes '11 Reinier Roibal

All season long, Volcanoes Watching will feature a different player and coach from the 2011 Volcanoes team. Today it is Volcanoes pitcher, Reinier Roibal.

Reinier was 1-4 but a solid 3:1 strike out-to-walk ratio and a 3.74 ERA this season, starting 14 games for the Volcanoes.

Reinier is 6'2" weighs 215 pounds and was born in Palma Soriano, Cuba.

Volcanoes alums Brown, Maday give Scottsdale AFL win

Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) had three hits and drove in two runs; Daryl Maday (Volcanoes '07) pitched four innings, yielding only one hit as the Scottsdale Scorpions (2-2, 2nd place AFL East) topped Phoenix 5-4 today.

Gary finished 3-for-5, 2 RBI, 1 run scored. Daryl was equally impressive; 6 strike outs in 4 innings pitched (44 strikes in 66 overall pitches) against some of the top prospects in Minor League Baseball

Volcanoes alums, Panik, Rosin, Harrold help Scottsdale to first AFL win

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) drew two important walks; Seth Rosin (Volcanoes '10) and Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10) pitched a perfect inning respectively to help the Scottsdale Scorpions to their first win of the 2011 Arizona Fall League season, a 7-3 decision against Phoenix.

The Scorpions (1-2, 2nd place AFL East) are back in action against Phoenix tomorrow.

In other Volcanoes alumni news, Cameron Lamb and the Perth Heath, defending Australian Baseball League Champions, begin their 2011/2012 season with exhibition games against Team USA on October 20.

Panik gets first 2 hits in AFL

Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) got his first two hits of the Arizona Fall League in a 3-2 setback against the Salt River Rafters.

Panik and the Scottsdale Scorpions (0-2) looked much more settled in this game though, as the club takes on Phoenix tomorrow afternoon. Joe was hitting eighth today in this prospect loaded line-up; further showing his ability to quickly adjust to different roles.

Volcanoes '11 Shawn Payne

All season long, Volcanoes Watching will feature a different player and coach from the 2011 Volcanoes team. Today it is Volcanoes outfielder, Shawn Payne.

Shawn played in 57 games for the Volcanoes in 2011 batting .306 (49/160) with 63 total bases and 21 steals. Shawn was born in Stone Mountain, Georgia and attended Middle George College.

Shawn is 6'1" 190 pounds and bats and throws right handed.

Volcanoes '11 Matthew Graham

All season long, Volcanoes Watching will feature a different player and coach from the 2011 Volcanoes team. Today it is Volcanoes pitcher,  Matthew Graham.

Matthew completed his second season of professional ball, this season playing 21 games (2-2, 8.35 ERA and a 3:2 strike out to walk ratio) for the Volcanoes and 12 games for Augusta.

Matthew was born in Spring, Texas and stands 6'4" 225 pounds.

Election '11 -- Giants ask your support of Pablo Sandoval

The six-time World Champion, San Francisco Giants are asking your vote as Pablo Sandoval is the team's nominee for the 2011 Hank Aaron Award - given to the best hitter in each league.

Pablo (Volcanoes '08) fought back after missing 40 games to injury to finish as the team's 2011 champion in home runs (23); RBIs (70), batting average (.315) and slugging percentage (.552); in short - Pablo won the Giants Triple Crown in 2011.

Volcanoes '11 Paul Davis

All season long, Volcanoes Watching will feature a different player and coach from the 2011 Volcanoes team. Today it is Volcanoes pitcher, Paul Davis.

Paul was new to the team, pitching just two games, but both were starts and he emerged with a 1-0 record with a 1.64 ERA and a 3:1 strike out to walk ratio.

Paul is one of the few members of the team born in the 1990s; the pride of Pensacola Junior College stands 6'2" and the righty weighs 210.

Volcanoes '11 Leonardo Ochoa

All season long, Volcanoes Watching will feature a different player and coach from the 2011 Volcanoes team. Today it is Volcanoes outfielder, Leonardo Ochoa.

Leonardo was signed by the Giants in 2008; born in St. Amable, Quebec and stands 6'0", 180 pounds. This season, Leonardo batted .265 (27/102), scored 13 runs and had 46 total bases in 29 games.
