Breaking News: Giants, Lincecum OK two-year, 40.5 million deal

Breaking News: Tim Lincecum (Volcanoes '06) and the San Francisco Giants have agreed in principle on a two-year, $40.5 million deal. The Giants also will be done with Barry Zito's $122 million deal in 2013 too (thus frees up money to offer Tim longer-term deal).

The Giants now focus on Matt Cain and some other key position players as the team is t-minus 4 weeks from pitcher and catchers. Yes, baseball is a team game -- but it also doesn't hurt the Giants' playoff chances with Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder now in the American League; (Prince signed today with Detroit).

In five MLB years so far, Tim is 69-41 with a 2.98 ERA and 1,127 strike outs; four consecutive 200 strike out seasons and 2 Cy Young Awards.

Giants extend Panda, Lincecum opts for arbitration

Volcanoes Nation - we have plenty of alumni in the news this week: the San Francisco Giants and Pablo Sandoval (Volcanoes '05) agreed to terms of a three year deal worth around $17.15 million. Nate Schierholtz (Volcanoes '03) re-signed for $1.3 million. Sergio Romo (Volcanoes '05) is headed to arbitration to settle the gap of $1.3 - $1.75 million. Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98) was signed by the club through 2014 - terms were not released.

Lamb, Burg, Perth Heat ready for playoffs

For the Bill James segment of Volcanoes Nations, here is an interesting sub plot involving the Perth Heat of the Australian Baseball League.

The Heat (30-10) go into the last five-game set of the regular season against Sydney starting Wednesday. Cameron Lamb (Volcanoes '11) and Alex Burg (Volcanoes '10) are among the league leaders in wins and home runs respectively. With five games remaining, the Heat also find themselves the only team in the ABL with a winning record: and with the difference between second and sixth so tight, thousands of playoff scenarios exist, include one where every other team finishes below .500.

Potential trivia question? As for the Heat, there are plenty of sports examples to show they need to keep focus next week in the playoffs, but Brooke Knight's (Corvallis, Oregon) squad has had a magnificent regular season.

Stay tuned for all the updates.

Exclusive interview: Cameron Lamb, Volcanoes '11

Cameron Lamb (Volcanoes '11) has been a busy man; there's no time yet to plan for the start of Spring Training, as Cameron and his team mates with the ABL's Perth Heat are looking for a strong finish as they enter the playoffs.

Cameron leads the league with 5 wins (the regular season is only 45 games); and the Heat have already set the ABL's regular season record for wins. With all the reasons to be excited, Cameron remains humble, focused and a team-first player.

Volcanoes Watching: Perth is again looking very strong, what's been the key to the team's success so far?

Cameron: First off, we have a unbelievable squad that goes out every night and plays for one another; the core group have all played with each other for a long time now and when it's needed it always seems like one of the boys stands up and gets the job done.

Volcanoes Watching: What was it like in the Asia Series against fellow Asia Champions?

Cameron: It was a huge honor to be invited and represent my home town Perth in that series. It was a great showcase series and was a experience I will never forget.

Volcanoes Watching: For you, co-leading the ABL in wins as a relief pitcher -- what's been the key for your on-going success?

Cameron: I have been fortunate to be put in a couple situations to pick up some cheeky wins, other than that I've just been going about my business as usual, getting some work in before spring.

Volcanoes Watching: You have basically been pitching for 2 calendar years straight; How mentally and physically have you paced yourself?

Cameron: I always have about a month off; when I get home and do nothing baseball related to try and give my mind a break. Also when I throw for the Heat it's been out of the pen somewhat limiting my innings, so i think I've found a good balance in between resting my body and still getting my work in.

Volcanoes Watching: How has playing on championship (Perth last year) / playoff teams helped you grow as a professional?

Cameron: Any time you can pitch in high pressure games it can only make you better so throwing in the playoffs last year and in the Asia Series was great experience you can't find in regular season.

Volcanoes Watching: and finally, do you think it would be easier for your team mates to play 20-over cricket at pro-level or the Australian National Cricket Team to play baseball at ABL-level?

Cameron: I don't know, Aussies are very competitive so either way it would be a lot of fun.

Alex Burg (Volcanoes '10 -- ABL home run leader), Cameron Lamb (Volcanoes '11 -- ABL wins co-leader), Brooke Knight (Corvallis, Oregon -- active ABL leader in managerial wins) are back in action tonight as part of the Heat's five-game series against the Bandits.
