Joe Panik featued story on Giants web site

Volcanoes Nation - want to see what your great support of Volcanoes players helps achieve? Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) is the featured story today on the San Francisco Giants official web site. The Giants article also includes an awesome three minute video of Joe arriving at the Giants Spring Training locker room for the first time. Joe's Giants number is 66, which he will wear during his Cactus League stint with the six-time World Champions.

Click here for the Giants article and video on Joe.

We know Joe's resume well - as Volcanoes fans saw the 2011 Northwest League MVP shine last season. For many in the Giants world, this season will be their first time to see one of the most talked-about young prospects in the game. Giants executives have said, through their web site, that Joe may be asked to play more second base - which could fast track his rise to a permanent spot in The Show.

The Giants first Cactus League game is Saturday.

Schierholtz featured story with Giants - return to starter role

He's back!

Nate Schierholtz  (Volcanoes '03) can lay claim to the nickname "the Comeback Kid" returning to starting duty for the six-time World Champion Giants in the critical right field position.

Nate showed plenty of heart spending much of 2011 in pinch hitter and reserve roles, then stepping up when playing time improved to set personal bests in home runs (9) doubles (22) and a solid .278 batting average.

Hitting is the critical need for the Giants overall this year - no secret there - the team has their core pitching at least through 2012 and only missed the '11 Wild Card by a handful of games because ranking last in the NL in many batting statistics.

Nate told SFGiants.com (click here to read article) that his goals are to keep it relaxed, make the most of this opportunity and keep the good momentum he built next year.

Spring Training: News and Notes - Feb. 25, 2012

Volcanoes Nation: here is today's News and Notes from Spring Training:

Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98) is scheduled to start throwing on flat surfaces starting Monday. Ryan had tweaked his back and as a precaution has been not throwing this week. Ryan is the Giants No. 4 starter going into 2012; a big jump from a calendar year ago when he was trying to earn a roster spot.

Giants skipper Bruce Bochy spoke the team during their first full practice on Friday and set the goal of being multi-dimensional and everyone raising their respective games.

One of the great stories of Spring Training with the big club is Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) who represents 12 of 25 Volcanoes alumni brought to camp as non-roster invites.

One week from today, the six-time champions begin their Cactus League season against Arizona.

Volcanoes Nation: here is today's News and Notes from Spring Training:

Panda Power! Today was the first full day of all-team practice for the six-time World Champion, Giants and the big impression was made by Pablo  Sandoval (Volcanoes '05).  Pablo was hitting moon shot home runs - both sides of the plate - during batting practice simulcast live through the Giants official website.

Pablo told on-site media he feels 100% and the LASIK surgery has dramatically improved his vision.

Pablo's team mate and fellow Volcanoes alum, Nate Schierholtz, put on a home run clinic also - further bringing excitement to his return to the starting role in 2012.

The Giants are back in action practice tomorrow - seven days until the first Cactus League action.

Spring Training: News and Notes - Feb. 21, 2012

Volcanoes Nation: here is today's News and Notes from Spring Training:

Tim Lincecum (Volcanoes '06) was held out of practice because of back stiffness (precautionary); with the Giants going all-in with their pitching expect similar moves throughout Spring Training.

Giants skipper Bruce Bochy has mandated Buster Posey (Volcanoes '08) not block the plate this spring. Obvious reason: the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year is starting a fresh year after a serious injury. This puts extra emphasis on Giants fielders to be laser-like when throwing home.

Pablo Sandoval (Volcanoes '05) reports to camp on Friday. The Panda says his focus is on continued good health - not necessarily a specific weight level and Pablo adds he is ready for another solid season.

Draft '12 Watch: College Baseball Report

Volcanoes Nation: the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft is June 4-6, 2012. The Giants first pick is 20th in the First Round (though, they are free to trade up). Both college and high school graduates will be in the mix. As part of following regional prospects, here is a look at college baseball - from which a future Volcanoes player may be drafted.

Oregon State Beavers (3-1, 0-0): Beavers had a strong opening series against UC Santa Barbara - all four games were highly contested, which builds extra experience for this young pitching squad.
  • Ryan Barnes and John Tommasini lead the Beavers with 6 hits each, respectively
  • Dan Child, Matt Boyd and Tony Bryant are off to a solid start - each has ERA's less than 2.00.
Oregon Ducks (2-1, 0-0): Ducks complete their four-game set against Hawai'i today already having won 2 of 3, including a 14-5 decision last night.
  • Aaron Jones has 6 hits to lead the Ducks in the young season
  • Jimmie Sherfy went 5.2 innings without yielding a run - opponents are only batting .105 against Jimmie so far.
NWAACC baseball is scheduled to begin March 1.

Spring Training: News and Notes - Feb. 17, 2012

Volcanoes Nation: here is today's News and Notes from Spring Training:

Pre-repeat? The Giants won last year's Cactus League (ok, no need for a parade) - and while Spring Training records don't mean anything, it will be important for the team's bats to look alive, especially the final exhibition games to at least give a sense of confidence on Opening Day. The Giants managed to finish 10-games over .500 despite being outscored last season -- but that didn't translate into a playoff berth.

Will Buster's bat be back? Buster Posey (Volcanoes '08) did everything right in his rehab from the significant leg injury -- now the question is, will his power development continue? The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants are counting on Buster to come strong out of the gate.

Vogelsong 2.0 -- Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98) was an amazing story last year with his 13-7, 2.71 ERA, 137 strike out season. With Matt Cain a free agent at the end of the season, Ryan could be even more valuable to the team. The question is: will 2012 prove the great story continues?

T-minus 72 hours until Giants Spring Training

Volcanoes Nation, we are just 72 hours away from the start of Spring Training for the San Francisco Giants. Dozens of Volcanoes alumni at various levels are looking to continue their careers with the big club.

All eyes will be on Volcanoes with the Giants: Tim Lincecum ('06), Buster Posey (Volcanoes '08), Pablo Sandoval (Volcanoes '05), Nate Schierholtz (Volcanoes '03) and Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98).

In addition to the core contingent above, 12 Volcanoes alums are part of the exclusive 25 non-roster invitees - including Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11) - to Spring Training as announced by Giants Senior Vice President and General Manager, Brian Sabean.

A very strong Volcanoes representation in the 25 invitees: right-handed pitchers Jake Dunning (Volcanoes '10), Justin Fitzgerald (Volcanoes '08), Austin Fleet, Stephen Harrold (Volcanoes '10), Heath Hembree, Andrew Kown, Mitch Lively, Shane Loux, Jean Machi, Seth Rosin (Volcanoes '11) and Shawn Sanford (Volcanoes '10); left-handed pitchers Brian Burres (Volcanoes '01), David Quinowski (Volcanoes '05, '09), Wilmin Rodriguez (Volcanoes '06-'07) and Matt Yourkin; catchers Tommy Joseph, Andrew Susac (2011 draft pick) and Jackson Williams (Volcanoes '07); infielders Joaquin Arias, Chris Dominguez (Volcanoes '09), Nick Noonan and Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11); and outfielders Gregor Blanco, Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10), and Juan Perez.

Numbers game - predicting wins for upcoming season

It's not the magic, tell-all formula but for those in Volcanoes Nation into stats, one popular formula to try predicting winning percentage is ((runs scored)2)/ ((runs scored)2+ (runs allowed)2).

The 2011 Champion Cardinals scored 762 runs and allowed 692 for a run differential of +70. Applying the formula you get: ((762*762)/ ((762*762) + (692*692)) = 580,644 / 1,059,508 = .548 (translates to a record of 89-73).

The 2011 Cardinals had a regular season record of 90-72 - which is a winning percentage of .556.

But, the formula is only a predictor. Look at the 2011 San Francisco Giants who scored 570 runs and allowed 578. Just look at the numbers = more runs allowed than scored should be a losing record. The predictive winning percentage is .493 (translates to a record of 80-82); the Giants overachieved by going 86-76.

One great thing about baseball is that the number of games gives plenty of room for research...and debate.

Volcanoes creating buzz with 2012 Giants

Visit the official site of the San Francisco Giants and you'll see a common theme -- Volcanoes alumni are creating quite a positive buzz as the team prepares for its Pitchers and Catchers, February 18.

Buster Posey's progress has been admirable and successful and the Volcanoes '08 alumn is ready to start catching as soon as the Giants first Spring Training game, March 3, against the Arizona D'Backs.

Tim Lincecum (Volcanoes '06) is featured with Buster on the cover photo of the Giants site, and fresh off of signing a two-year $40.5 million deal, is ready for another run at the NL strikeout title.

Pablo Sandoval (Volcanoes '08), himself fresh off signing a three-year, $17.5 million year, said the Giants are firmly focused on getting back to the playoffs this season.

Nate Shierholtz (Volcanoes '03) was a great story of persistence last season and took great pinch hitting into a return to the starting line-up in 2012.

On the mound with Tim, is the great story of Ryan Vogelsong (Volcanoes '98) projected the team's number four starter and Sergio Romo (Volcanoes '05) who is slated as the team's eighth inning set-up man against righties.

Lucky number 13! Perth wins ABL title again in extra innings

In a game of inches, the Perth Heat found a way to repeat their the ABL title, and with it, two championship rings for Volcanoes alumni and another for the team skipper from Corvallis, Oregon.

Perth rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to top Melbourne 7-6 in 13 innings, the second 13-inning playoff game for both teams the last 24 hours.

Cameron Lamb (Volcanoes '11) finished a very strong season; one of the best overseas relief performances this entire winter. Click here for the ABL write up and official championship picture.

Cameron finished with a 5-1 record, 1.57 ERA and 13.1 consecutive innings without yielding an earned run.

Alex Burg (Volcanoes '10) finished batting .277 with 10 home runs and 23 RBI; Alex had a .374 on-base percentage.

Skipper, Brooke Knight, a Corvallis native, led his team to a 34-11 regular season (.756 winning percentage) and second consecutive ABL title.

As the ABL season ended, the official start of Spring Training also began in the States with the Mariners getting the OK from MLB to start a few days early.

Winner takes all - Volcanoes alum go for Aussie title tonight

Cameron Lamb (Volcanoes '11) was yet again dominant pitching 3.2 scoreless innings; but as Melbourne topped the Perth Heat 3-2 in 13 innings both teams will meet tonight for the ABL title.

Despite his humble nature (click here for past exclusive interview with Cameron), there is no denying the Volcanoes alum has been clutch all season, including his dominant playoff pitching performances. Overall, Cameron has gone 13.2 innings without surrendering an earned run.

With that said, all is on the line tonight for the Heat, looking to repeat their ABL title, or the Melbourne Aces, looking to pull off the upset.

Spring Training '12: Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10)

Volcanoes Watching brings you an in depth look at Spring Training 2012. One of the 25 non-roster invitees to the Giants Spring Training camp this year is Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10).

Gary was the Giants First Round choice in 2010 and hasn't disappointed. After getting 27 plate appearances with the Volcanoes in 2010, Gary exploded with San Jose in 2011, batting .336, a .407 OBP, with 14 home runs, 80 RBI and 53 steals (plus 13 triples!).

The 6'1", 190-pound center fielder was a fellow Arizona Fall League premiere player with Joe Panik and Gary was named one of the top stars in the Giants organization.

Volcanoes Watching brings you an in depth look at Spring Training 2012. One of the 25 non-roster invitees to the Giants Spring Training camp this year is Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11).

Spring Training '12: Chris Dominguez (Volcanoes '09)

Volcanoes Watching brings you an in depth look at Spring Training 2012. One of the 25 non-roster invitees to the Giants Spring Training camp this year is Chris Dominguez (Volcanoes '09).

Chris signed with the Giants after being drafted in the Third Round in the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft (interesting side note - he was drafted by Texas in 2005 and Colorado in 2008, not signing with either).

The 6'3", 215-pound righty has played mostly first and third in his professional career and has shown good power: Chris has 50 home runs, 226 RBI in 1,329 at bats -- that roughly translates in a 162-game season to 25 home runs, 113 RBI with a .268 batting average.

Chris finished last season with the Double A play off team in Richmond.

Lincecum feature story on Yahoo.com

Tim Lincecum (Volcanoes '06) was the featured story tonight on Yahoo.com which reported the two-time Cy Young Award winner will report to camp 22 pounds lighter (in a good way) when Spring Training starts later this month.

Lincecum told reporters at the 20102 Giants fan fest that a regiment of swimming and more healthy eating was the catalyst for getting in, in the pitcher's words, better shape.

Health was the theme of the Tim's fellow Volcanoes alumni Pablo Sandoval (Volcanoes '08) who had a very strong year last season after dropping nearly 40 pounds.
