“TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY PESKY” NIGHT AT VOLCANOES STADIUM

Volcanoes Nation This Friday, August 31st, the Volcanoes will Honor the memory and achievements of Johnny Pesky with a “Johnny Pesky Tribute” Night.

On August 13, 2012, we unfortunately lost a great member of our baseball family. The great Johnny Pesky, from Portland, who spent 73 years in professional baseball; 61 years with the Boston Red Sox organization as a player, coach, manager, and team executive, passed into the Arms of GOD.

Johnny was a legend in the world of baseball, and especially among Red Sox fans. The right field foul pole at Fenway Park is named the “Pesky Pole”. Johnny became the symbol of the Red Sox for seven decades, and had such a positive impact on so many lives during his rich and blessed life. He played alongside Red Sox greats Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr. His first day with Boston, Ted Williams asked him if he could hit .280. Pesky said, “I can bunt .280, and ended the season hitting .330.

This Friday, August 31st, the Volcanoes will Honor the memory and achievements of Johnny Pesky with a “Johnny Pesky Tribute” Night. Many longtime baseball players and fans will be here, including Johnny’s brother, the great Vince Pesky, a New York Yankee organizational player, former player and coach at University of Portland, and member of the Portland Baseball Hall of Fame.

Also, arguably the GREATEST SECOND BASEMAN EVER, Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer, Bobby Doerr, will be here, and will be available for fans to get a very valuable FREE autograph. A true collectible. Bobby played with Johnny Pesky and Ted Williams. In fact, he played his entire 14-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox, was a nine-time American League All-Star, and Boston retired his # 1 jersey; one of only 7 former Red Sox to have their number retired. He was the 1944 American League Player of the Year.Inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1986, Bobby Doerr is the oldest living Hall of Fame player at 94 years old.

Volcanoes win again, back to .500 three games out of playoff spot

Game 32 of the 2012 Northwest League season saw your Salem-Keizer Volcanoes dig deep for another victory, this 5-2 decision over Spokane gets the Volcanoes to 16-16, three games out of the final playoff spot.

Yes, there are teams in-between, yes, there are six games left in the 2012 regular season -- bottom line: your Volcanoes are doing exactly what any team in a playoff chase needs to do... win.

Your Volcanoes have one more game at Spokane tomorrow then head home for a definite playoff feel five-game series against Tri-City, August 28-Sept. 1.

Vancouver, currently sitting in first place at 19-13 (though trailing at time of publication) has one more home game before playing their last five games on the road at Yakima.

Your Volcanoes needs Yakima to win at least three of those last five.

Eugene currently is in second place at 18-14 (and are leading at time of publication). After their last road game of the regular season at home against Tri-City, the Ems return home to host Spokane for five.

Basically same guidelines here, Volcanoes want Spokane to take at least three in that series.

But calculators, what-if scenarios and good luck charms aside, the one thing the Volcanoes control is their own performance, and this is a great chance for you amazing fans to help put the club over the top.

Hill / Rapp batting race energizes Volcanoes August

It's as friendly of a rivalry as it can get, but Volcanoes fans are sure enjoying the team batting contest between Kentrell Hill and big Joe Rapp  who are just 10 points a part with 11 games to play.

Because of minimum at-bats these two men are currently battling for the batting title; for those new to the stats of batting average, there are minimum at bats so a player who only gets 10 percent of the action isn't awarded the batting crown.

Kentrell is 50/175 (.286) with a .397 on-base percentage; big Joe is 63/238 (.277) with a .381 on-base percentage. Barring any major surges from other players, Joe will win the home run and RBI team crowns so the batting title is needed for the Volcanoes Triple Crown.

Volcanoes control destiny for playoff spot

Yes, there's lots math and wins and timing that is required, but the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have done enough that they can control their own destiny to grab the last Northwest League playoff spot. The Western Division again has all teams about three games in the mix; your Volcanoes play all the folks they need to beat to finish the second half in first place.

August 16 (today)- August 18: Volcanoes battle Eugene and both teams are neck and neck for second place in the division, so the natural hope is the Volcanoes can steal two of three down south, deflate the Em's a little before returning home to Salem-Keizer.

August 19 - August 21: Volcanoes Nation - this is a playoff series, just that it's still the regular season. Vancouver, the defending NWL Champs, comes to town for a three game set.

So you can imagine the importance and great opportunity the next six games bring.

August 22- August 26: Spokane is 9-13 this second half and this last home stand is their final chance at the post season; so expect the Indians to throw everything they have at the Volcanoes.

August 28 - September 1: the Volcanoes return home for five last regular season games against Tri-City. By that point, it's the mad dash and we all have our calculators out seeing what tie-breaking implications are at play.

The San Francisco Giants and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have agreed to extend their Player Development Contract. The parties agreed to extend their relationship through the 2014 season. The agreement, which calls for the Giants to stock the Volcanoes with their prospects, now extends the affiliation between the parties to a total of twenty (20) years that began in September, 1994. The existing agreement between the Giants and the Volcanoes would have expired on September 30, 2012.

The Agreement was signed in the dugout at AT&T Ballpark prior to the Giants’ game on Monday versus the Washington Nationals as Mickey Walker, son of Volcanoes’ Jerry and Lisa Walker, was working as the Giants’ batboy for the Nationals game. Volcanoes’ President, Jerry Walker, and Vice President of Stadium Operations, Rick Nelson, met with the Giants’ Vice President of Baseball Operations, Bobby Evans, to sign the Agreement.
“We are extremely happy about our association with the Giants,” said Walker. “We’ve had a stretch of very good clubs here in Salem-Keizer winning our Division Championship in 4 consecutive years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). Our fans like the association with the Giants as many of our fans are lifelong Giants fans,” noted Walker. "The Giants have enjoyed being a part of the Salem-Keizer community and have particularly appreciated the commitment of the Volcanoes' ownership and management team in the assistance they provide in helping us develop our young players," said Giants Vice President of Baseball Operations Bobby Evans. "We look forward to continuing an already great association with the Volcanoes."

Volcanoes prepare final push for the playoffs

Your Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will finish the night at 10-11 and remain right in the thick of the last 2012 Northwest League playoff chase, getting enough road wins to make their upcoming homestands all the more important. The Volcanoes are looking to make up a three-game space between them and Vancouver, which is very achievable with 17 games to play.

The Volcanoes are at Eugene August 16-18, home against the Canadians August 19-21 and play East Division opponents the rest of the way.

Mickey Walker gets a moment in The Show
We also got a great picture sent from the San Francisco Giants from last night where our own Mickey Walker was a batboy and got closer to the action than most will ever see in an official Major League game.

This shot was taken with Mickey collecting Brandon Crawford's (Volcanoes '08) bat after Brandon went yard.

Volcanoes players and Front Office staff thank you for your wonderful support again this season. See you at the ballpark the rest of the way.
