The "out of office" message you'd love to have

Thanks for your email; I am currently out of office following the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, hopefully through the magical end of the 2013 Northwest League playoffs. But your work question is very important to me.

During my absence please forward any of your key questions to Crater, who will respond as soon as possible. You may also send a message via the video board at Volcanoes Stadium and while I won't respond, I will admire your ingenuity. Warm regards...

Volcanoes Stadium field to be named McLaran Field for Opening Night

Volcanoes Nation -- we are very proud to announce: on June 14, for the first time in the Volcanoes Stadium's 17 year history, the field will be renamed, and the Volcanoes and Hillsboro Hops will play on McLaran Field for Opening Night. The naming is in honor of community leader and baseball enthusiast Mike McLaran who recently passed away unexpectedly.

McLaran, the long-time Executive Director of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce,
was instrumental in the relocation efforts of the Volcanoes from Bellingham, WA,
in 1997, and remained supportive of the team every year. Mike played baseball
for the University of Oregon Ducks until the program was disbanded in 1981.

The McLaran family will participate in a pre-game tribute to Mike, and watch as
the Volcanoes play Oregon’s newest professional baseball team, the Hops, on
McLaran Field that evening.

Memorial Day -- 2013

Volcanoes Nation -- much like baseball is the great unifier as a sport; Memorial Day is a great unifier as a holiday to give special thanks to all sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, family alike, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep the United States free. Our ability to have different opinions, experiences and dreams comes directly from those who gave their lives so the rest of us may live free.

We take a moment of silence for all those American heroes on this Memorial Day -- 2013. We say, "thank you."

This Week with the Walkers -- May 26, 2013

Volcanoes Watching sat down with the Walker family to talk baseball, the community and the positive impact the team's wonderful fans make on Volcanoes Baseball.

Q: Jerry Walker:  Twenty-five years in baseball ownership and direct baseball business management -- does it start to sink in when people put you and Lisa in the very top of most influential Pacific Northwest Minor League Baseball owners of all-time?

A: Well, we never thought of it that way.  I suppose tenure does often correspond with influence.  It's natural that folks would look to those who have been doing an activity for a long period time for counsel and advice.  We enjoy what we do and for us that is truly satisfaction enough; we enjoy helping others and that is makes it all the better.

Q: Lisa Walker: Many local cancer survivors look forward to the new Volcanoes season to celebrate their journey of hope, health and belief. Do you believe setting fun goals and celebrating positive events with friends is an important part of a cancer survivor's journey?

A: Cancer for me was a great “grace”. I rediscovered my faith and it has continued to grow in abundance since then. A tremendous result of this is the desire to share that discovery with anyone who will stand still long enough :)My personal goals are centered around my family (which includes our Volcanoes family) and our faith community. Giving and sharing “hope” that is eternal and taking very good care of our survivors is a gift to us and the most important part of this cancer survivor’s journey!

Q: Mickey Walker: Do you think the American League should continue to have designated hitters while the National League has their pitchers bat? And, do you think a DH sometime soon will get elected to the Hall of Fame?

A:  My first thought was, undecided.  Then, upon thinking about it more, I think it is fine the way it is -- makes each league unique.  If it was all the same you might as well just have one league!  Now for a DH to be in the Hall of Fame...  No, it doesn't look like it will happen soon - heck Edgar Martinez can't get in with a .309 lifetime average, over 300 home runs and more than 1,200 RBI.  He only received 36% of the vote.

2013 Host families

Volcanoes Nation -- be a direct part of building future World Champions!

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, a Class A affiliate of the 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, will arrive soon in Salem-Keizer. The franchise has a history of offering host family opportunities to local families. The Volcanoes will keep this tradition intact by living with families in the Salem-Keizer area this summer. This is an excellent opportunity to ‘live the life of a professional athlete’through an ‘adopted player’ for a few months.Team members will begin arriving on June 12th and will need housing for the period from June 15th to approximately September 3rd, depending on post-season play. Interested families should have a spare bedroom, live close to the Keizer area or on public transportation routes or have alternative transportation methods available for the players. Team members averaged age is 20 - 22 years old. The players do supply compensation to the families to help offset their room and board expenses. Families who would like more information on this exciting program should contact, Kari Naughton at  (503) 393-2311  or cell  503-871-5716  or Jerry Howard at 390-2225 ext. 3002 or cell  503-779-4088 .

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and Keizer Chamber of Commerce Partner to Promote River Road Merchants

Volcanoes Nation -- supporting 'local' begins with 'shopping local': The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Class A affiliate of the 2010/2012 World Series Champions San Francisco Giants, and the Keizer Chamber of Commerce have partnered to promote businesses on Keizer’s ‘main street’, River Road.   The program will include creation of one of the biggest, if not the biggest, outfield fence signs in professional baseball!  The sign will be atop the homer porch, directly above the Stadium’s left field wall and be 12 feet tall by 120 feet long !!  “I don’t know of any sign larger than this in baseball,” noted Volcanoes’ owner Jerry Walker.  “Certainly there isn’t anything larger in the Northwest.”

“The length of the sign will be symbolic of River Road in Keizer, very long with many businesses on both sides of the road,” stated Christine Dieker, Executive Director of the Chamber.  “It’s one of my personal goals to provide added exposure for the River Road businesses as they are the foundation and represent the history of this great City,” said Derik Milton, President of the Chamber.  “I cannot think of a better way to expose the vast variety of businesses on River Road to the 150,000+ fans and visitors at Volcanoes Stadium e

The 4 foot center section of the sign, which is currently under construction, will feature a graphic of River Road – stretching the entire 120 feet (artist conception below).  There will be room for thirty (30) business logos, 4 foot by 4 foot in size, on each side of the road (60 total signs).
ach year,” concluded Milton.

For information on how to be included on the sign, contact Michael Trevino or Marc Kaufman at Volcanoes Stadium – 503-390-2225.

Pill makes stay with Giants count

Volcanoes Nation -- Brett Pill (Volcanoes '06) is having a wonderful season with Triple-A Fresno, and when the big club needed short term help, Brett answered the call going 2-6 with two doubles with the Giants.

Brett is back with the Grizzlies tonight -- not because of him -- but because the Giants need some extra bullpen arms. For now, Brett is looking to continue his Fresno fireworks where he is batting .341 with nine home runs and 47 RBI in only 32 games.

Brett has 104 Minor League home runs, and six in The Show.

In memoriam, Victor Torres

Volcanoes Nation, we take a moment of silence tonight for Victor Torres, a hitting coach and instructor within the Giants Player Development department for the last six years, who passed away Wednesday in Florida. He was 61 years old

"The San Francisco Giants are deeply saddened by the passing of our former minor league coach, Victor Torres," said Senior Vice President and General Manager, Brian Sabean. "Victor was a tremendous person who proved to be a great asset to the organization with his ability to communicate and mentor our young hitters. He will be deeply missed and our condolences go out to the Torres family for their tremendous loss.

Torres most recently served as the hitting coach for the Arizona Giants in 2012, a position he held for five seasons beginning in 2007. He also had a one year stint with double-A Connecticut during the 2008 campaign. Torres had worked in professional baseball since 1994 and previously ran his own baseball academy in Puerto Rico and Florida from 1973-1989.

NIKE to Sponsor Showcase Event, July 4, 2013

Volcanoes Nation -- the heart of what you all build and make wonderful here is making Volcanoes Stadium a venue for future stars to go after their dreams.

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Affiliate of the 2010/2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, are pleased to announce the two Head Coaches for the Futures Games on July 4th at Volcanoes Stadium, featuring 38 of the best baseball prospects in the State of Oregon.

Coaching the American Futures team is Bert Hunter.   Coach Hunter was a 2nd round draft pick of the Houston Astros in 1985, and advanced his playing career to the AAA level with Tidewater Tides and the Norfolk Tides in the International League after being traded to the New York Mets in 1992.   After nine seasons playing professional baseball, he began his professional coaching career spending ten seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization both coaching and managing.

Hunter managed for six years in the Arizona League with the San Francisco Giants organization from 2001-07. His club won four league titles and he was named manager of the year in 2004. Bert was a fan favorite with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes as their hitting coach from 1998 through the 2000 season.

Coaching the National Futures team is Tony Torcato.   Coach Torcato was a 1st round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 1998 draft, and first played professionally for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.   Advancing his playing career each year, he debuted with the San Francisco Giants in July of 2002.   He played four years with the Giants compiling a .298 batting average.   Later in his career he was signed as a free agent by the Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Mariners.

“The goal was to have Head Coaches whom the players could identify with as they pursue their dreams of playing professional baseball,” said Jerry Howard, Coordinator of the Futures Game.  “Coach Hunter and Coach Torcato both were highly touted players and drafted very high.  In addition, they both add a local flavor to the games as former Volcanoes!”

“We are proud to announce NIKE has stepped up to become a major sponsor of the 1st Annual Futures Games at Volcanoes Stadium.  NIKE and the Volcanoes see this as a great opportunity to enrich and enhance baseball in Oregon”, said Volcanoes owner, Jerry Walker.  “Our goal is to provide these outstanding players a terrific venue and opportunity to showcase their talents.  Hopefully, some of these players will someday play for the Volcanoes”

The Futures Games will feature a twi-night doubleheader with two seven inning games; one beginning at 4:00 PM and the nightcap at 7:15 PM.   Between games, selected players will participate in a Home Run Derby and a Base Running Speed Contest.   Immediately following the nightcap will be the 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza, a Stadium tradition which began 17 years ago.

This week with the Walkers

Volcanoes Watching sat down with the Walker family to talk baseball, the community and the positive impact the team's wonderful fans make on Volcanoes Baseball.

Q: Jerry & Lisa Walker:  Volcanoes Stadium is hosting a huge college baseball game: Oregon State Beavers and University of Portland Pilots on Wednesday, May 8th. Game time is 5:30 p.m.; gates open at 4:00 p.m. How does it feel to see top college baseball teams all want to play at Volcanoes Stadium during their seasons?

A:  The use of Volcanoes Stadium is at an all-time high.  It's nice to have the Beavers back at the Stadium.  When the Beavers played the Ducks at the Stadium a few years back it was one of the best ever attended events.  The Ducks' Jordan Spencer threw a no-hitter at Volcanoes Stadium last year.  Corban and Willamette have played a number of games at the Stadium, as has Western Oregon University.  This is great for the community and local economy as it brings them and their opponents teams from across the region, into the city.

Q: Mickey Walker:  Seeing your folks own a Minor League baseball team, and all the hard work they, you and the Front Office puts into each season -- what is the best part and most challenging part of professional baseball business in your opinion?

A:   The details are enormous.  There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that fans don't see.  The actual playing of the game is the culmination of many weeks and months of preparation.  I suppose its kind of like a wedding in that regard -- but, I wouldn't know :)
