Volcanoes alumns Harris and Williamson leading San Jose

Volcanoes Nation | there is nothing better than seeing our alumni in a home run race, especially when the top-two are both former Volcanoes.

The already playoff bound San Jose Giants (Class A Advanced, Giants) are energized behind the strong performance of Devin Harris (Volcanoes '10) who has 20 home runs so far, one ahead of Mac Williamson (Volcanoes '12).

San Jose, just like the 2013 Volcanoes, won their first half division and are headed to the postseason which makes it all the more thrilling to watch Harris and Williamson swing for the fences.

Panik solid in Double-A

Volcanoes Nation | Joe Panik (Volcanoes '11, NWL MVP '11) is halfway home to being a regular player with the Giants, as the Volcanoes alum is having a solid season starting 98 games for Double-A Richmond.

Panik, a 2011 First Round draft pick, has 93 hits in 371 at-bats (.251) with 3 home runs, 35 RBI and 8 stolen bases. The Volcanoes '11 star also has a .972 fielding percentage.

The Giants organization has been very deliberate in Panik's progression as he has remained with the same team in each of his three seasons, which means, maybe in 2015, Joe Panik is starting somewhere in the infield for your Giants.

Volcanoes alumn Posey helps Giants get key win

Volcanoes Nation | Buster Posey's  (Volcanoes '08) 13th home run this season, a critical two-run shot, helped the San Francisco Giants to another much needed win: tonight a 4-3 decision against the Arizona Diamondbacks (parent club of the Hillsboro Hops).

The NL West might be won with 85 wins this season; at this point, the Giants need to get back to .500 this season asap to begin to seriously entertain those thoughts. Still only 4.5 games separate the defending World Champions from first place.

Sergio Romo (Volcanoes '05) got his 23rd save of the 2013 season. Both teams are back at it tomorrow.

Volcanoes alumn Justin Fitzgerald gets shot at Triple-A

Volcanoes Nation | on a night when your 2013 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes look at clinching a Northwest playoff spot, we also salute our alumni. Justin Fitzgerald (Volcanoes '08) is now learning the ropes in Triple-A Fresno, after a crisp stint with Double-A Richmond, where he went 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA in six games

In 2008 with your Volcanoes, Justin was 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA and 5 saves in 14 games. He kept at it and now is one step away from The Show.

That 2008 Volcanoes team, made it all the way to the Northwest League Championship Series before Spokane won in four games.

Tonight, perhaps, the latest chapter of Volcanoes playoff lore will begin to take shape.

Volcanoes alumn Tyler Mizenko keeps on saving games

Volcanoes Nation, there is a future Giants closer out there and his name is Tyler Mizenko (Volcanoes '12). The 6'1" 200-pound righty, the pride of Winthrop College, already has 21 saves for Augusta (Class A, Giants) this season, and has 34 total, accounting for 13 last season at Salem-Keizer.

Tyler's professional career ERA is less than 1.70 and he has a 4:1 career strike out to walk ratio. Sill plenty of journey ahead before the Giants, but maybe we'll see him closing the deal in 2015 in The Show.

Volcanoes help SJ Giants to 2013 playoffs

Volcanoes Nation | a multitude of recent Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have helped the San Jose Giants (Class A, Giants) already clinch their tenth consecutive season in the California League playoffs.

The SJ Giants clinched the 2013 North Division First Half title, which means, yes the team can start selling playoff tickets...wouldn't it be nice to clinch the division and sell playoff tickets in July...hmmmm....

Mac Williamnson (Volcanoes '12) is second on the team with 17 home runs and already has 25 home runs and 89 RBI in his first career 125 Minor League games.

Angel Villalona (Volcanoes '07) is third on the team with 14 round-trippers and has 42 RBI in 73 games with San Jose so far this season.

Catcher, Jeff Arnold (Volcanoes '10) has 11 four-baggers and 43 RBI.

In 33 innings on mound, Cody Hall (Volcanoes '11) has a 1.34 ERA.

San Jose also remains in the top spot in the North Division with a second half record of 15-10.

Volcanoes alums lead Fresno HR tally

Volcanoes Nation | as the Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A, Giants) go into their All-Star break, the team's home run leaders all have a common tie: the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Johnny Monell (Volcanoes '08), and Brett Pill (Volcanoes '06) each have 15 home runs to lead Fresno; Chris Dominguez (Volcanoes '09) is third with 12 long balls; Gary Brown (Volcanoes '10) is tied for fourth will 11 round-trippers.

With your 2013 Volcanoes tied with Boise for the league lead with 17 home runs, there seems to be plenty of power getting developed in the pipeline!

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes BP for Charity

Editor's note: to learn more about contributing to Salem-Keizer Volcanoes charities, and specifically of the Volcanoes charity work with cancer survivors, please contact Volcanoes Owner & GM, Jerry Walker: probasebal@aol.com (spelling is correct in link)

Charity gives one the chance to be a part of a cause, moment or movement that is bigger than themselves. That in itself is noble. When you get to participate in charity doing what you love, then you truly are blessed.

Justin Lacche | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2013
Advice from the Skipper
As I drove down I-5 to Volcanoes Stadium today there was a little time to reflect on the Volcanoes batting practice for charity, my second year, which is a chance to be a part of a greater good: helping the very fabric of this wonderful community that does so much for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

This organization truly, sincerely and passionately cares about people; it is one of great drivers for all of us in the Front Office. Giving back isn't a catch phrase -- it is a foundation so critical we are challenged daily to deliver on it.

Earlier in February we raised a couple hundred dollars for the batting practice and in weeks leading up to today's event had collected additional pledges. So really the only "pressure" was that I didn't go 0-for-47 on World Series trophy day.

Justin Lacche | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2012
There was  another factor: being a part of the Front Office, it was critical to me to completely respective the space, the routine and the focus of our Volcanoes players, coaches and staff. This group is so united and playing such great baseball that no one, certainly yours truly, wanted in any way to disrupt that.

Jerry Walker, Top Leip and Jerry Howard were perfect in helping me quietly get to the club house, getting my official #46 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes uniform and on the field.

Our Skipper, Gary Davenport, a total class act, took the time to coach me and also set high expectations about how I was to produce. There is no place in this game for excuses - even for a charity.

The batting practice, under the late afternoon sun, went about as good as a 39-year-young batter could expect. And the experience was capped off with sharing the 2012 World Series trophy with our amazing Volcanoes Nation family.

Baseball is a beautiful game and its fabric is tied by the communities around us, as diverse and complicated and wonderful as anyone can expect. Salem-Keizer Volcanoes charities is great a cause I
personally stand by, and am grateful to have allowed to be a part of again this year.

To learn more please contact Volcanoes Owner & GM, Jerry Walker: probasebal@aol.com (spelling is correct in link)

Sincerely

Justin Lacche

This Week with the Walkers | 7/10.2013

Volcanoes Watching sat down with the Walker family to talk baseball, the community and the positive impact the team's wonderful fans make on Volcanoes Baseball.

Q: Jerry Walker: so many exciting story lines to the Northwest League and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes so far -- what stands out to you?

A:  Being in first place with a four-game lead at this point of the season is fantastic.  There is a lot of enthusiasm and our manager, Gary Davenport, has done a terrific job !

Q: Lisa Walker:  Our fans still are impressed/amazed about how many events the Volcanoes offer for home games -- both for fun and for community awareness. How do you pull it off so successfully year after year?

A: We have plenty of material to work with and a creative staff and interns. The community has many needs that we can showcase during our season. Our staff is a part of this community and embraces opportunities to help. Our interns come from all over the country and bring many fresh ideas and great energy to the organization. It is a win/win for the Volcanoes!

Q: Mickey Walker:  You've seen the 2013 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes up close -- what are your impressions of this team so far?

A:    They are really playing well together.  Most of the players are very experienced and have played together last year in the Arizona League and then in extended spring training this year. This has given us the early edge and has resulted in a lot of wins !

It's all about or fans

Volcanoes Nation | I had my weekly meeting with Tom Leip, Volcanoes’ President of Business Operations. Tom, just like the Walker family, is so dedicated to the fan experience. People ask why the Volcanoes are positive with other teams? It's because we draw our energy from our amazing fans. So we encourage every team to do the same.

You all give so much to us, by coming to the ballpark or following the team on the radio during road games or following us year-round on the Facebook, Twitter and our other sites. It really is inspiring and pushes all of us in the Volcanoes Front Office to raise our games to make your experience really special.

Thank you all Volcanoes Nation -- you make us champions. We are honored to help you have a championship experience. You all deserve it!

Tom Leip joins Volcanoes

Volcanoes Nation | another great hire!

Tom Leip, whose baseball resume dates back nearly 30 years to 1985 with his role as Executive Vice President for Brett Sports Entertainment, will become the Volcanoes’ President of Business Operations.  Leip’s extensive experience in sports began as he supervised operations for the Northwest League’s Spokane Indians and the Spokane Chiefs (Western Hockey League) during his seven-year tenure in Spokane.  Leip became the Executive Director of the Northern League and helped the fledgling league become the most successful Independent Baseball League in Baseball.

Leip’s baseball journeys then came back to the Northwest as he supervised the record-setting ticket sales efforts of the Portland Rockies which later led to creating Game Face Marketing.   Leip helped take the company to premier status in sports sales training.  Leip was also instrumental in setting up the operations of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers as Director of Ticket Sales.  After serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Portland State University, Leip was the President of Sucase, LLC a sports marketing firm with numerous clients across the United States.  Most recently, Leip served as the General Manager of the FC Edmonton (North American Soccer League).

“We are obviously pleased to have Tom join the Volcanoes.  I’ve known Tom for 25 years and his extensive background in sports marketing, his character and personal integrity,  is a perfect fit for the Volcanoes.  I’m delighted to add Tom as a valued and key member of our management team,” said Volcanoes’ co-owner Jerry Walker.

“I’ve observed the Volcanoes’ operation since their inception and have always admired how professional and successful they have been.  It is truly a great honor to have the opportunity to join such a fantastic well-run and respected company,” said Leip.

Leip’s first day with the Volcanoes will be July 1, 2013.
