Between Innings with GreyWolves Head Baseball Coach Justin Barchus

GreyWolves (Lacche): Baseball at this level of course needs talent; but how much is winning also about the "mental/academic" focus and preparation?

Coach Barchus: It's very important. Most of the players at the college level need to understand that one day, their baseball career is going to end. If they aren't taking their academics seriously, they are going to have a hard time when that day comes. As far as winning goes, the higher the level, the more the game becomes a mental battle. At this level, everyone is talented, so the goal is for our guys prepare themselves mentally to be dialed in for nine innings. That will be huge for our group this year!

Between innings with Volcanoes 2015 Manager, Kyle Haines

Volcanoes (Lacche): Especially the first 7-10 games of a short-season, how do you build team chemistry and identity both on and off the field?

Coach Haines: The big things early are to create a culture, gain trust, and set the expectations. We are trying to make winning players for the San Francisco Giants and to do that our players need to understand the work ethic and competitive nature that we expect from them. As far as team chemistry, a big part of that is made up by the character of the players you have and also who the leaders of the team are. Playing in a short season, it sometimes takes a little while since everyone is mostly new to each other, where as full season teams usually have guys that have played together for a few years. So trust and execution are key.

Between Innings with GreyWolves Head Baseball Coach Justin Barchus

GreyWolves (Lacche): How does it feel being chosen from a strong list of candidates to manage the WCL expansion team in Gresham?

Coach Barchus: It's an honor. I feel like every great coach in any sport needs some breaks to get to the top, and I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to coach in this great league, and with this great organization! I'm excited because I live in the area, and I grew up around the area, so I know how supportive of baseball this community is. I believe in this franchise!

#‎VolcanoesNation‬ -- Between innings with Volcanoes 2015 Manager, Kyle Haines

Volcanoes (Lacche): You played in 366 professional baseball games, the majority in the Giants organization -- is it a dream come true being one of the up-and-coming managers now in the organization you started in?

Coach Haines: I really don't think about that at all to be honest. My focus is making our players better everyday and introducing them to the way the Giants organization views success; and the expectations we have for them on and off the field. If I do a good job at that, then my career will take care of itself. My goals aren't for myself and my career anymore, they are for the players and their careers. It is an honor for me to be a Giant again and be with the organization and people that mean so much to myself as a player and now as a coach.

Between Innings with GreyWolves Head Baseball Coach Justin Barchus

GreyWolves (Lacche): You, yourself, are an athlete with the CrossFit Games -- does it help relating to top prospect athletes, being one yourself?

Coach Barchus: I think it helps me in multiple ways relate to top athletes; I've had experience at the regional level in CrossFit, which allows me to understand how to prepare my body for competition. It also helps me relate to the players on a competitive level; I know what their body goes through on a day to day basis, I have a good idea when they need to be rested, and I generally have a good idea what state of mind they need to be in for a competition. During my work at the University of Illinois I also gained a lot of experience in what is expected of them at the Division 1 level, that will be very useful moving forward.

Walker family purchases 100 percent of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes

Family renews firm commitment to local community and championship professional baseball

KEIZER -- In another victory for keeping championship Minor League Baseball in this community, the Walker family confirmed today their purchase of 100 percent of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes after completing the purchase of the shares from Bill Tucker. Tucker and Jerry Walker brought their franchise to Salem-Keizer, from Bellingham, Washington, in 1997, as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and have jointly owned the franchise since 1989.

"Lisa and I are honored that this ownership partnership of 27 years helped contribute to three World Series Championships and six Northwest League pennants; it is one of the great recent runs in Pacific Northwest Minor League baseball and we thank Bill Tucker and his family for their true passion for the game," Jerry Walker said. "The commitment to championships and this community is stronger than ever before."

The full ownership purchase also allows for continuity as Jerry Walker has served as the team's CEO, President and General Manager since its inception and has always been the 'hands on' local owner.  Tucker, whom is retiring from baseball, lives on Long Island in New York.

“We embrace our history and fully embrace the future. Our own son, Mickey, has grown up with the Volcanoes; this team, this community is our family," Jerry Walker said. "Lisa and I and our front office staff are working full time planning for our 20th Anniversary Season coming in 2016 and we are personally dedicated to making 2016 a fabulous season.  Fans will experience several new Volcanoes Stadium additions for this upcoming season, which further reflect our long-term commitment to Volcanoes Baseball,” concluded Walker.

Volcanoes tickets and merchandise are on sale at the Stadium Team Store at Volcanoes Stadium.  The store is open Every Day until Christmas.  Fans can also place their orders by calling 503-390-2225 or online at www.volcanoesbaseball.com

Walkers bring baseball to Gresham!

GRESHAM, OREGON – The wait is over! Gresham will proudly have its own West Coast League franchise and a chance to win the WCL Pennant in 2016.Mayor Shane Bemis along with West Coast League President, Dennis Koho, made the announcement today.   The Gresham team will play an exciting 54-game WCL schedule during the summer with all home games at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

This is a major win for Gresham and area fans as the West Coast League features top teams across the Northwest including Bend and Corvallis in Oregon along with Bellingham, Bremerton, Longview, Wenatchee, Yakima and Walla Walla in Washington.  Victoria and Kelowna round out the League with teams in British Columbia.

The owners of the yet to be named Gresham team are Jerry and Lisa Walker of Keizer, Oregon.  The Walkers were the driving force behind the building ofVolcanoes Stadium in Keizer 1997, when they moved their Bellingham Giants team to Oregon and began play as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

The Volcanoes have since won five Northwest League Championships and seven Division Championships and 89 of their players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues.  The Volcanoes are long-time affiliates of the 2010, 2012, 2014 World Series Champions San Francisco Giants.

“Lisa and I join the entire WCL, City of Gresham, Mt. Hood Community College and areas fans in celebrating this important on-going step to continue to grow established and exciting baseball franchises in the Pacific Northwest,” Jerry Walker said. “Gresham and surrounding communities are hungry for a pennant of their very own. This also gives this wonderful community a chance to literally help build the franchise from the very grass roots and have a team all their very own. We have seen the thrill of what five Northwest League Championships have brought our loyal fans in Salem-Keizer, and three World Championships our Volcanoes alumni helped bring in San Francisco. This will be the next chapter in community-based, family-friendly, championship-caliber baseball.”
The team’s nickname and mascot will be determined through a community-wide ‘name the team contest’.  Fans can immediately begin submitting their entries by email to greshamwclbaseball@gmail.com
